Try our Walks

The Ramblers is a membership organisation and a registered charity. NELR group walks are primarily intended for Ramblers' members but anyone resident or studying here, who is considering joining the Ramblers, is welcome to come on two or three walks, to see if it's their "cup of tea". Then join the Ramblers if you wish to continue walking with a group. It helps our finances if you choose to be allocated to North East London Ramblers - see the FAQs page for details of how to do this.

Welcome!

North East London Ramblers Group is part of The Ramblers and our walks are led by volunteers. We normally offer a walk every Saturday and some weekdays, always using public transport. NELR has a membership of about 400 people, from across London and beyond. We welcome all Ramblers of any age or background.

Tips for Summer Walking

Ramblers' guidance can be found Here. In hot weather bring plenty of water (at least double your usual intake on a walk). Protection from the sun is also essential, including sunscreen (SPF30+) a wide-brimmed hat or sun umbrella, plus sunglasses. Salty snacks help to replenish sodium lost through sweat, improve water absorption and prevent muscle cramps.

About our Walks

Our walks normally range from 8 to 14 miles, sometimes with drop-out options for those preferring shorter distances. Each walk description gives information about what to expect.

NELR also organises midweek walks, including a monthly Coffee and Stroll. On these walks we meet in a cafe, then have a walk of up to about 5 miles, through local parks or open spaces, taken at a leisurely pace and with drop-out points near to public transport along the route.

Ramblers' walks are all graded, to help you decide if they are right for you. Guidance on walk gradings can be found Here.

Bear in mind that an 8 mile hilly walk on muddy fields can be as difficult as 13 miles on flat, firm footpaths. Weather conditions also affect the walk; so very hot or humid weather can slow the pace.

Please follow any instructions for booking on a walk, if required, ensuring that you enter your details correctly. Please cancel promptly if you change your mind, to give others a chance to book and as a courtesy to the leader.

Most of our Saturday walks have a lunch stop at a pub. If you prefer to bring a picnic (many regulars do) the walk leader will suggest a place for you to eat. Please don't consume your own food and drinks anywhere on the pub's premises, unless express permission is given, and do buy a drink if you want to use the facilities.

Our walks are led by unpaid volunteers. Walk leaders set the route and pace of walks and decide on stops. Walking ahead of the group can alter the pace and cause confusion. The duration of walks will vary according to the pace of walkers, timing of breaks, etc. Therefore, leaders cannot give a definate time for returning to London and it's unfair to ask them. If you have fixed plans for the evening, it may not be advisable to go on an all-day walk.

There is more information about joining NELR walks in our FAQs page. Ramblers' guidance on joining group walks can be found Here and it includes:

"Follow the walk leader’s guidance, pace and instructions at all times. Look out for others in the group – we don’t leave anyone behind! Be aware that plans may change as our walk leaders adapt to conditions on the day and do let the walk leader know if you are struggling at any point".
